Some indicators look at price like it is standing still. Projection Oscillator is a little smarter than that. It asks where the close price is inside a projected price range, not just inside a simple high-low range.
Think of it like this: Stochastic asks, “Where is price inside the recent range?” Projection Oscillator asks, “Where is price inside the recent range after considering the trend?” That extra trend correction is the whole point.

History
Projection Oscillator is based on Projection Bands, developed by Mel Widner, Ph.D. The method was introduced in the July 1995 issue of Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities.Projection Bands use regression-based projections of highs and lows to create an upper and lower band. Projection Oscillator then measures where the closing price sits inside those bands.
So this indicator is not just another overbought and oversold tool. It is a range-position indicator with a trend-aware structure.
How It Works
Projection Oscillator starts with Projection Bands.
- The upper projection band is created from projected highs.
- The lower projection band is created from projected lows.
- Then the oscillator compares the close price with these two bands.
- A common formula is:
Projection Oscillator = 100 × (Close – Lower Projection Band) / (Upper Projection Band – Lower Projection Band)
- If the close is near the lower band, the oscillator moves toward 0.
- If the close is near the middle of the bands, the oscillator is near 50.
- If the close is near the upper band, the oscillator moves toward 100.
Many versions also include a smoothed line, often an EMA of the oscillator, used as a trigger line.
How To Read It
- A reading above 80 usually suggests that price is near the upper projection band. This may indicate overbought pressure, but it does not automatically mean price must reverse.
- A reading below 20 usually suggests that price is near the lower projection band. This may indicate oversold pressure, but it also needs confirmation.
- A move above 50 suggests that price is moving into the upper half of the projected range.
- A move below 50 suggests that price is moving into the lower half of the projected range.
The trigger line is also important. When the Projection Oscillator crosses above its smoothed line, bullish momentum may be improving. When it crosses below the smoothed line, bearish pressure may be increasing.
Practical Use
The first use is identifying overbought and oversold zones.
- If BTC reaches the upper projection band and the oscillator rises above 80, traders may watch for weakening momentum or a short-term pullback.
- If ETH reaches the lower projection band and the oscillator falls below 20, traders may watch for selling pressure to fade.
The second use is trigger-line confirmation.
- A bullish signal may appear when the oscillator crosses above its trigger line, especially from a low zone.
- A bearish signal may appear when the oscillator crosses below its trigger line, especially from a high zone.
The third use is divergence.
- If price makes a new high but Projection Oscillator forms a lower high, bullish strength may be weakening.
- If price makes a new low but Projection Oscillator forms a higher low, bearish pressure may be fading.
Crypto Example
Suppose BTC rallies toward resistance, and Projection Oscillator rises above 80.This tells traders that price is near the upper side of its projected range. If the oscillator then crosses below its trigger line, the rally may be losing strength.
Now suppose ETH falls toward support, and Projection Oscillator drops below 20.If the oscillator turns upward and crosses above the trigger line, traders may watch for a rebound setup.
Common Mistakes
The first mistake is using it exactly like Stochastic.
- Projection Oscillator is similar to Stochastic, but it includes a regression-based projection component.
The second mistake is shorting every reading above 80 or buying every reading below 20.
- In strong trends, price can stay near the upper or lower projection band longer than expected.
The third mistake is ignoring price structure.
- A bearish signal near resistance is more meaningful than one in the middle of nowhere. A bullish signal near support is usually cleaner than one floating randomly on the chart.
Key Takeaways
Projection Oscillator was developed from Mel Widner’s Projection Bands. It measures where the close price sits inside the projected upper and lower bands.
- Values near 100 mean price is near the upper band.
- Values near 0 mean price is near the lower band.
It can be used for overbought and oversold analysis, trigger-line signals, and divergence.
For crypto traders, Projection Oscillator is useful because it adds a trend-aware layer to classic range analysis. It helps answer one practical question: is price stretched inside a projected trend range, or is there still room to move?
