OpenAI to introduce AI app monetization with GPT Store

Artificial intelligence lab OpenAI has begun plans to introduce a way for generative pre-trained transformers (GPT) creators to monetize their personalized artificial intelligence (AI) systems. OpenAI will roll out these personalized AIs to the newly launched GPT Store, a marketplace for personalized artificial intelligence applications.

The company announced its GPT monetization plans alongside the launch of the GPT Store in a blog post on Wednesday, Jan 10. “In Q1 (2024), we will launch a GPT builder revenue program. As a first step, U.S. builders will be paid based on user engagement with their GPTs,” it read. The publication further stated that the store will initially be rolled out to users on paid ChatGPT plans.

The GPT Store is located within the popular ChatGPT chatbot and is a place for users to discover and build GPTs or AI customized for tasks like teaching math or designing stickers. The GPT Store is divided into sections, including DALL-E, writing, productivity, research and analysis, programming, education and lifestyle.

Specialized GPTs in DALLE-E create images from ideas, while the writing section refines text. Productivity enhances efficiency, and research and analysis aid in information interpretation. Programming supports coding and learning; the education section explores ideas and revisits skills. The lifestyle section provides tips on travel, workouts, style, and food.

When trying to download the WebGPT, the GPT requires the user to sign up for ChatGPT Plus to chat. The Microsoft-backed startup announced the GPT Store in November 2023 at its first developer conference and was initially set to go live later that month.

According to Reuters, OpenAI postponed the GPT store launch in December, stating it was improving GPTs based on feedback. The delay coincided with the unexpected removal and subsequent reinstatement of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman due to employee concerns.

In addition, on Jan 10, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Team, a paid version for companies, ensuring private usage at work. Priced at $25 to $30 per user per month, it segregates a company’s data to maintain confidentiality.
